Terms of service

Last updated 17 August 2026

These are the terms you accept by using Unlock PDF. They are written to be read rather than to be impressive.

What the service does

Unlock PDF removes the open password from a PDF when you supply that password, and removes copy, print and edit restrictions. It is free to use, with or without an account.

It cannot open a PDF whose password you do not know. There is no password cracking here, and no way to ask for it.

Only use it on documents you are entitled to unlock

This is the one rule that matters. By uploading a file you confirm that you own it, or have permission from whoever does, or are otherwise legally entitled to remove its protection.

Do not use this service to defeat protection on documents you have no right to. Doing so may break the law where you live, and it is your responsibility, not ours. We cannot tell from a file who is entitled to it, which is precisely why this is on you.

Accounts

An account is optional and is created by signing in with Google. You are responsible for keeping access to that Google account and to any passkeys you register.

We may suspend or remove an account that is being used to abuse the service — for example to evade the rate limit — and we may do so without notice.

Limits

Guests may process files up to 25 MB and 150 pages. With an account that rises to 100 MB and 5,000 pages. Both are limited to 10 files an hour.

These limits exist to keep the service usable for everyone, and they may change. If we ever charge for a higher tier, the free tier described here stays free.

Your files

Your file is processed in memory and never written to disk, and your password is never stored or logged. The full detail is on the privacy page.

Because nothing is stored, we cannot recover a file for you afterwards. Keep your own copy of anything you care about.

No warranty

The service is provided as it is, without any warranty. We do not promise it will be available, uninterrupted, or free of faults, and we do not promise that every PDF will process correctly — some files are damaged in ways nothing can read.

Always keep the original of any document you process here. Do not rely on this service as your only copy of anything.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of this service, including lost or corrupted documents, lost time, or lost income. This is a free tool doing one small job.

Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top says when they last did. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept the current version.
